Habia Cable relocates telecom production to China

Beijer Alma’s subsidiary Habia Cable AB is a world-leading manufacturer of cables for base station antennas. To strengthen its competitiveness in this area, the company has decided to relocate its production of telecom products from Söderfors in Sweden to China. The plant in Söderfors will continue to focus on the production of advanced custom-designed cable for the defense industry, nuclear power industry and other industries with high demands.

Antenna manufacturers, which make up Habia’s largest customer group, have been concentrating their production operations to China for several years. To fulfill its customers’ requirements, Habia Cable already conducts more than half of its manufacturing of antenna cables in China. Now that the remaining operations are being relocated, a certain level of redundancy will occur at the plant in Söderfors. Accordingly, the company has decided to issue layoff notices to approximately 35 employees.

“Our investments in recent years in the manufacturing of custom-designed cable in Söderfors and Tierp, combined with an improved economic situation, should result in growth in other segments. This could mean that fewer people will have to leave the company than were issued layoff notices,” says Johan Vinberg, President of Habia Cable AB.

“Habia’s investments in China have enabled the production of high-quality products at significantly lower costs than before, thus strengthening the company’s market position,” explains Bertil Persson, President and CEO of Beijer Alma AB.

The company’s production operations will be relocated gradually during autumn 2010.
